Geraci Law Attorney Scott Greenwood Reports: Client waited until the very last minute to get me documents I'd requested. By "last minute," I mean the morning of a court date when our attorney had already left for court. Knowing that the outcome of the court date hung in the balance, I printed out the documents and ran them over to the Federal Courthouse just in time.
Geraci Law Attorney Laura Caputo Reports: A client dropped by the office on March 15th and mentioned that he wanted to vote. He had not yet updated his address with the state, so I looked up his polling place allowing him to vote in the Illinois primary.
Geraci Law Attorney Megan Hayes Reports: My client appeared at his court date with no proof of his Social Security number. I convinced the Trustee to hold the meeting by providing a copy of his tax return, as I was prepared and had all of the necessary documents with me. My client was grateful that he did not have to come back another day.
Geraci Law Attorney Anthony Shull Reports: A client was having problems filing her taxes online. I took the time to help her log in and walked through the process with her. She ended up owing a little bit of tax debt, but didn't have the money to pay it. She is filing a Chapter 13, so I added the tax debt to her bankruptcy, and made sure the Chapter 13 payment would cover the debt. After she e-filed her taxes in the office, I filed her case.
Geraci Law Attorney Dale Riley Reports: A client ran up new tax debt right before he would otherwise have been done with his Chapter 13. The State of Illinois filed a claim to add the debt to his case, which would have caused his plan to last another year. I negotiated with the Illinois Attorney General, and convinced them to withdraw their claim and work with the client directly so that his case can end on time.
Geraci Law Attorney David Lulkin Reports: A client went to his court date, but a security guard refused to let him in because he had an expired ID. I went down to the lobby and walked the client up to his meeting.
Geraci Law Attorney Thomas Barbour Reports: I helped a client close her account with United Collections. They were not going to issue a refund until I asked them to refund everything in trust. Turns out $1,700 was in account. Client was very happy to get that money, if I had not told him, he would have not asked about it.
Geraci Law Attorney Alex Wilson Reports: Client was terminated from his job. He is currently in a Chapter 13 plan. He is worried about his ability to fund the chapter 13 plan. He also cannot convert his case to a Chapter 7 because he is trying to protect some property that is non exempt. He didn't have an appointment, but I had some extra time, so I reviewed his current budget, the claims that were filed in his case and was able to file a motion to modify his plan payment from $850 per month to $200 per month, on the spot, which still allowed him to protect his non exempt assets.
Geraci Law Attorney Ashley Chike Reports: The client fell behind on her mortgage due to an unanticipated expense. She was unable to cure the entire default but wanted to keep her home under bankruptcy protection. I worked out an agreement with her mortgage company to pay a very small amount each month in addition to her regular mortgage payment. This allowed the client to keep her home under bankruptcy protection and prevent foreclosure even though she fell behind after her case was filed.
Geraci Law Attorney Chad Garrapy Reports: I assisted a client out to her vehicle. She recently suffered a stroke and had a bypass surgery and is wheelchair bound. Her husband had his hands full with his documents, so I helped them get her to their vehicle safely.
Geraci Law Attorney Jason Shimotake Reports: I sent a client a condolence card after the loss of a loved one.
Geraci Law Attorney Robert Crowley Reports: I recovered $2600 for a client. The funds were garnished shortly before case-filing and certain districts allow us to recover those funds. This is one of the reasons to hire attorneys with superior knowledge of the law.
Geraci Law Attorney Kristin Schindler Reports: Client appeared at our office ready to file. Her driver’s license had been suspended for an uninsured accident and she needed quick and efficient filing so she can return to work. After the consultation I drafted her petition with her, we pulled the required documents online and scheduled the credit counseling course. We filed her case the next day and she was ecstatic with the service.
Geraci Law Attorney Michael Holsen Reports: March 16 was a particularly windy day in Racine, and the client said she was "almost blown over" by the wind on the way in! Since she is elderly (just turned 86 and going strong!), I walked out with her and blocked the wind for her as she got back to her car. I then held the door for her until she was in safe and sound so that it did not blow shut while she was getting into her vehicle.
Geraci Law Attorney Alexander George Reports: I was able to call OneMain, who had a title loan on a very old vehicle, and get them to send a lien release on the vehicle. Clients were able to wipe out the $19k title loan and now have clear title to the vehicle.
Geraci Law Attorney Mariusz Zatorski Reports: Both clients were very nervous at their appointment to sign their petition. Calmed them down, told them they are getting a fresh start, which is the best thing they can do for themselves and their son. They agreed and went home happy.
Geraci Law Attorney Marc Affolter Reports: Client went to go see other attorneys before she came to see me but didn't like any of them because their attitudes were just awful, and they were not very flexible working with her. While we were finalizing her paper work her little son was running around the office causing all kinds of mischief, and we were both working as a team to keep him occupied so that we could focus on getting her case filed. She said, "If you don't have kids yet I hope you know that you are going to be an amazing father, your patience with both me and my son has been incredible." She said she is going to tell all of her friends that if they need help with their debt, there is only ONE place to go, and that is to see Marc Affolter at Geraci Law!
Geraci Law Attorney Jason Kara Reports: I saw the client in the parking lot struggling to get the stroller out of her car. I went outside and helped her with the stroller, helped her get into the office with the stroller, and also helped her when she was leaving.
Geraci Law Attorney Kathryn Mackenzie Reports: Clients in need of a larger vehicle because they watch their grandkids weekly and couldn't fit the car seats in their current vehicle. They really needed the vehicle as soon as possible and were told it could take up to 10 business days for Trustee approval. They said they really needed the vehicles because the grandkids have off this week so they will be carting them around a lot more than usual. I sent over the request to the Trustee indicating the approval was needed immediately. Trustee sent approval letter within 3 hours! Clients were ecstatic.
Geraci Law Attorney Lavita Ball Reports: Actually have done this in a few cases now. But this is the latest: The client had unfiled tax returns. Clients often don't file them because they cannot afford to pay H&R Block or a similar tax preparer hundreds of dollars to file old returns. I contacted a representative at the IRS for legitimate tips on filing basic/simple old returns that don't involve wasting hours at the IRS for help. She suggested a few websites. Among them was http://www.freetaxusa.com. I advise every client that we as a firm are not endorsing the site but it is a helpful tool they can use to get the unfiled federal returns done for FREE. My clients have all said the site is fast and simple. They have thanked me over and over for saving them time and money in getting their taxes done so we can move on with their case! This particular client used it last night and said it took less than an hour to file 4 years of returns!! People with complex returns should go to an accountant, of course.
Geraci Law Attorney Charles Kinzer Reports: Client wanted to finance a used car at 18% interest at $427/month. I talked through her situation and found that she's about to get a tax refund of around $6,000. Suggested buying a car outright with that, and she agreed that that'd be a much better plan than $427 every month. I went online and helped her research possible reliable used vehicles that were about the same thing as what she was planning to finance at a huge rate.
Geraci Law Attorney David Kosk Reports: Client and daughter came in to finalize their case and wanted to file that day so daughter would know when she had to take off of work to take client to her mandatory meeting of creditors. Drafted the case while clients waited in the office then reviewed the petition. I was able to get Hananwill on the phone for client to take the credit counseling course while I worked on filing her case. When she completed the course, I was able to get supervisor approval to file her case. Client and daughter were delighted that we were able to complete the process in the office that day.
Geraci Law Attorney Mark Levine Reports: An elderly client confided in me at her initial appointment that one of her very close friends has been the victim of identity theft and that her friend has absolutely no idea what to do or where to go, and is despondent (client is 70 years old, her friend is 72). I told her that I can help! We have a lot of experience with this sort of thing, we see it frequently, so I printed out the Federal Trade Commission’s Guide to ID Theft (which we keep on hand) and gave to her. Told her to give it to her friend, and explained to her the most important aspects. I also told her that she should advise her friend that a large majority of the time the culprit is a relative or friend of the victim – sad but true. I also suggested that if friend has other debt issues that she may be able to benefit from a bankruptcy, so after the ID issues are resolved call us!
Geraci Law Attorney Lisa Haley Reports: Client was on the verge of a panic attach when asked about her Home Owner Association. Was under a lot of pressure and stress and I was able to calm the client down and put her at ease. She was smiling and laughing by the time she left the office.
Geraci Law Attorney Kristin Beilke Reports: This story is about standing up to the trustee: The trustee has a policy of using the gross business income to determine if the case is over median. This is contrary to all the other trustees in Illinois. There is a split in case law but nothing binding. We are going to brief the issue and it will save the clients about $6,000 when we prevail.
Geraci Law Attorney Brent Berning Reports: Geraci Law filed our client's case in less than 24 hours and rushed notice to her payroll to save her from being garnished.
Geraci Law Attorney Jason Nielson Reports: A filed Chapter 13 client was paying too much in minimums on a title loan, credit cards and struggling to pay for her meds. Extremely happy we could get one lower payment to cover her car and bills. Helped her to her car because uses a walker to get around (had broken her hip 2 months ago).
Geraci Law Attorney Ryan Fojo Reports: The Trustee filed a motion to dismiss our client’s bankruptcy for term of plan because the second mortgage company from a surrendered property filed a proof of claim for over $80k! The proof of claim failed to attach the judgment or necessary documents. I filed an objection to the claim, sent out on proper notice. There was no response to the objection and the judge sustained my objection. Plan will now complete on time and the second mortgage will receive nothing.
Geraci Law Attorney Lizette Villegas Reports: Spanish speaking client came in without an appointment to finalize his Chapter 7 bankruptcy. He had all of the required documents except for his credit counseling course. The course is offered in English, unless there is a Spanish translator available. To prevent any waiting time, I contacted Hananwill (the company that offers the course) and set up an appointment for 30 minutes later. As a Spanish speaking attorney, I translated the course for him over the phone. He completed it, signed off on his bankruptcy petition, and I filed the case on the spot!
Geraci Law Attorney Joseph Blaha Reports: Helped him make decision NOT to go further into debt by financing a car and now his Chapter 13 plan can take care of all of his tax debt in only 36 months!
Geraci Law Attorney Ann Kramer Reports: I helped client look up the bus routes so that she could find the easiest way to get to her mandatory meeting of creditors. She really appreciated that I took the time to do this for her so that she can make it to her meeting without having to worry about driving downtown or paying to park a car.
Geraci Law Attorney Lisa Ellmaurer Reports: Client is not familiar with the downtown area and was very concerned about locating her car that she had parked prior to her mandatory court date. She what street corner she had parked it on, but had no idea how to get to that location from the courthouse. After her hearing, I walked her out of the courthouse (which can be a confusing building to get out of), and walked her to her car that was several blocks away.
Geraci Law Attorney Abraham Pinon Reports: Elderly clients needed to send loan modification paperwork to their mortgage company. Last time they spent $50 at Fedex. I saved them the trip and faxed the paperwork for them. They were so grateful that even though it isn't part of their bankruptcy I took the time out of my day to help them.
Geraci Law Attorney Frank Hernandez Reports: Arrived straight from work, I offered him pizza and snickers, which he gladly devoured and said he will refer friends and family to us as we have it all, especially compassion.
Geraci Law Attorney Adam Suchy Reports: A client came in on a Monday looking to file a bankruptcy as soon as possible to prevent a garnishment of her wages. She came back on Wednesday with all the items the court requires for filing and we will have her filed well before her citation date!
Geraci Law Attorney Kyle Dallmann Reports: Filed motion to end case early for client diagnosed with cancer, so they can spend their time and money on that problem rather than paying back old creditors.
Geraci Law Attorney Cecil Scruggs Reports: Clients came in without an appointment because they were just served lawsuit documents and were fearful of receiving a wage garnishment. The good thing is they brought along with them all the required documents needed to file their case. So I drafted a petition with them and filed the case the same day so that we could stop the lawsuit proceedings. The clients were very grateful that this was able to be done and that they didn't have to worry about being garnished.
Geraci Law Attorney Briana Czajka Reports: Clients received an offer to refinance their home to a lower interest rate. We were able to get approval from the judge for clients to refinance, and obtain a payoff letter from their current mortgage so that their refinance could close smoothly and they could take advantage of the lower mortgage interest rate.
Geraci Law Attorney Steven Camp Reports: Filed a client’s case in one appointment while she took the mandatory Credit Counseling class. She was amazed at the speed and efficiency of Geraci Law and was happy to be debt free within a few hours.
Geraci Law Attorney Amanda Lester Reports: Client had vehicle repossessed before coming in. Got case filed within 2 days of client coming in for initial consultation. Worked for over a week trying to get creditor to release the vehicle, even after client did everything finance company asked for. After a week of non stop back and forth, client was able to retrieve her vehicle.
Geraci Law Attorney Lacey Stier Reports: Client's largest debt is a judgment from an uninsured car accident. We need a copy of the accident report but Client was having a hard time obtaining it. He went to the City County Building on his lunch break but was told nothing could be found without the date of the accident which he didn't have. I suggested he call Plaintiff's attorney and (without mentioning the impending bankruptcy) request the date. The Clerk still couldn't find it but when client called me back I searched the date online and found the report! He will purchase it with his debit card at his appointment later today. He's very happy we found it so he could get back to work.
Geraci Law Attorney Daniel Fasman Reports: My client was unable to locate copies of his older tax returns after his case was filed. He knew we had his taxes on file and came into the office to get copies. I printed a copy for the debtor to keep for his records.
Geraci Law Attorney Felicia Petroff Reports: Our clients were confused about when their vehicle lease ended and found themselves suddenly needing a replacement vehicle. Mr. is working and receiving treatment for service related PTSD out of state, so without a second car, Mrs. and their child would be without any transportation. Filed an emergency motion to get a car purchase approved, shortening the notice time so we could get approval as soon as possible so Mrs. and child will have transportation and Mr. won't have to add to his stress worrying about his family in another state.
Geraci Law Attorney Andrew Nelson Reports: Single mom came in stressed out because her employer keeps cutting her hours and she can’t afford to support her kids and pay her debt any longer. We discussed how we could help her with her situation to get debt free and worked out a good plan for her on the fees. She came back with her documents and funds and we filed her case and she said she felt much better and could now breathe a sigh of relief because she can feed her kids instead of struggling to pay her debt.
Geraci Law Attorney Wylie Mok Reports: The Trustee filed a motion to dismiss client's case for non payment. Client was off work (seasonally) from Nov Dec, but has been back to work since January 1st and brought proof of his payments through payroll control. Despite evidence the payments have been coming out of his check for the Trustee, the Trustee's website shows NO payments had been received! I called his payroll department directly to find out that payroll had switched to a new system and hasn't been sending payments. Told payroll this is inexcusable, that payroll MUST send regular payments or will get our client’s case dismissed and cause a lot of unnecessary work, payroll rep says they will mail it immediately and the Trustee received it all the following week.
Geraci Law Attorney Morgan Decker Reports: Attorney Morgan Decker's client had been having a really hard time supporting her household with only her income. Her husband was in and out of work with temporary jobs and she felt guilty for being upset that all the responsibility was put on her. Attorney Decker had a long talk with her about her feelings, let her vent while going over all her options. She was also mad at herself for getting into trouble with payday loans and Morgan let her know that it happens when she is trying to keep everything afloat. We will be filing a consolidation and helping address ALL debt and she was so relieved she knew she could sleep easy tonight and also take some stress off her marriage.
Geraci Law Attorney Jennifer Asbury Reports: Twenty three year old son lives with client. He went to school, but college closed after he attended, and his degree is practically worthless. Took out student loans to pay for school, and can't afford to pay them now. Printed off paperwork for them to look into having the loans forgiven due to the school being closed. Extremely grateful, because looking forward to him being out of the house and being able to afford things on his own.
